For those who participate The 10th IAF congress

The 10th IAF congress will be held from October 5th (Sunday) to 13th (Monday) at Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture.

Those who want to participate in assembly/seminar are requested to fill out the registration form below. As the number of beds at Wakayama Nanki Sports Center is limited, there may be a case that your demand can not be met.

The registration forms from IAF members’ which have been received by January 31st will be given priority.

Seminar fees

All those who attend the seminars are required to present the pledge and pay the insurance fee other than the seminar fee. Please fill out and sign on the pledge below and present it on the occasion of check-in.

This congress is totally supported by Tanabe City Government and they are planning to provide with free transportation system (buses) between accommodation-seminar place and/or between Tanabe city -Demonstration venue.

On 30th June 2008, the late Dr Foo Ong Pin was awarded the rank of Shodan (post-humous) by the Malaysia Aikido Association, with the approval of Seiichi Sugano Shihan. The Association recognizes the dedication and determination of Dr Foo in his practice of the art of Aikido and is pleased to fulfill Dr Foo's dream of reaching of achieving the shodan rank. The award was received by his wife, Mrs Foo in their family home during his 'wake' on the night of 30th June 2008.

Dr Foo Ong Pin departed at 1.40am on 30th June 2008 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Deepest Condolences to Mrs Foo and her 2 daughters

A tribute from Dr Leong KW:

Age did not deter his venture into the world of Aikido in his late 50s. Though I have known him to be my senior in school (Methodist Boys' School KL) and a senior paediatrician in Subang Jaya Medical Centre, I did not really get to know him until he stepped into our dojo at Jln. Scott, Brickfields to learn aikido 4 years ago.

He was a model student, starting from scratch, arduously learning to back fall, front roll and eventually to do break fall from a height. He took everything in his stride, occasionally even 'testing' me with great resistance to see if what I had taught him would work and laughed away in submission as I subdued him with a firm lock. He tried hard to do the techniques the way I taught him.

As an outstanding individual in society, he did not ask to be treated different. He was tested like any other member and rose through the ranks by his own determination and effort to 1st kyu. He had no hesitation in calling me (his junior in school and in the medical profession) his Sensei. In fact when I thanked him for paying for my supper one night, he told me it was his privilege to treat his instructor! He was due to be graded for 1st degree black belt in Aikido this 26th July.

As his love for Aikido deepened, he started looking at ways to help the MAA. He suggested a House Committee to manage the HQ dojo ahd he agreed to head it. He offered to put up horizontal bars across the windows for the safety of the members. He was already exploring on fund-raising projects for our 15th Anniversary celebrations next year. But alas, the MAA has prematurely lost a warrior.

I mourn the loss of my good student and friend. May the friendship and spirit of Aikido accompany and protect him in his journey into the next life. My deepest condolences goes to Mrs Foo and her 2 daughters.

Hello fellow aikidokas.

I am Simon from Australia. You may have enjoyed throwing me around sometime at the HQ dojo or during a seminar.

As you may have heard, I am putting together a newsletter for our club.

I thought I would put out the word to see if anybody has anything they would like to contribute.

The newsletter is a collaborative effort. It should represent our views.

So, of course, I am welcome to any contributions you may like to be included.

(Also, your contributions help by allowing me to do less work. Is not the way of aikido to carry out an action without using a lot of force?)

I don’t have a clear idea about the layout of the newsletter yet.

But for the moment, I wonder if:

Maybe you have an interesting story about aikido?

Maybe you have had some experience where aikido helped you?

Maybe you can recommend particular aspects of aikido philosophy I could include?

For instance, maybe you know of a particular interesting written statement about aikido practice?

I would also like to include a snapshot of some of our members.

If you would like to be included in this gallery of talent maybe you could email me telling me your name, age (optional), what you do for work/study and MOST IMPORTANTLY why you enjoy wearing white pajamas, perspiring a lot and being thrown around by people you had never met before you started training.

Could you please also attach a scanned photo when you send me this information. I would appreciate that.

After the recent Sugano Shihan’s Summer Camp in Australia

The Malaysia Aikido Association is pleased to announce the following and respective congratulations for their achievement:

Shihan titles have been awarded to Tony Smibert (6th Dan), Bob Botterill (6th Dan), and Hanan Janiv (6th Dan).

George Lo Sensei has been promoted to 6th Dan (Roku Dan).

Tony Smibert Shihan has a long relationship with the Malaysia Aikido Association, having been to Malaysia and taught the MAA students on many occasions. Tony Smibert Shihan, Bob Botterill Shihan, and Hanan Janiv Shihan are senior and long-time students of Sugano Shihan. They are also members of the Technical Teaching Committee in the Aiki-Kai Australia. George Lo Sensei is also a senior and long-time student of Sugano Shihan, and a member of the Technical Teaching Committee (appointed by Sugano Shihan) of the Malaysia Aikido Association.

In the recent Summer School in Melbourne, Australia, the above were also individually awarded medals by Sugano Shihan in recognition of their 'more than 25 years of studentship' with Sugano Shihan.

In conjunction with the Australia Aikikai Summer School 2008, Sugano Shihan has chosen to recognise and celebrate the achievement of those students who have been studying with him for 25 years or more. The MAA is proud to announce that George Lo Sensei, a member of our Technical Teaching Committee, will be among those honoured. Please note that attending the Summer/Winter Schools, and other seminars conducted by Sugano Shihan in Australia would be considered to part of the requirements for their Dan examinations. Students will need to show proof of attendance.
